Santasi community calls on Ghana Water company over persistent water shortage

Residents of Santasi in the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly are up in arms over an acute water shortage that has now lasted almost two weeks.

The crisis has disrupted daily routines, worsened sanitary conditions and forced many to trek long distances with buckets in search of water.

Speaking to Adom News, some of the residents said that the shortage has become a nightmare.

“We have to wake up by 4 a.m. to join long queues for water,” one said. “The only alternative is buying from polytanks, which is unreliable and expensive”, a resident said.

Another resident added that, “Life without water is no joke. We can’t cook, wash or bathe and the authorities should treat this with urgency”.

A hairdresser summed up the frustration: “Honestly, this water problem is really bad. You have to walk a long distance before you get water. It interrupts our daily activities especially we the hairdressers. We plead with the authorities to help solve this problem”.

Residents are calling on the Ghana Water Company to take immediate action.

Maame Akosua, a local polytank owner whose tanks have become the community’s lifeline, said the situation is heart‑wrenching.

“The people of Santasi are really suffering for water. The water from our borehole polytanks is even better than what the Ghana Water Company supplies because of the galamsey activities that have polluted many of the main sources.”

She urged the government to act: “We need an end to the illegal mining that is destroying our water bodies. Only then will we have clean, reliable water for everyone.”

Unit Committee Chairman for the Santasi Electoral Area, Frank Owusu, acknowledged that the water shortage has become a recurring phenomenon. He said the committee, together with the assembly member, is doing its best to find a permanent solution, but could not assure the public that the problem will be fixed anytime soon.
