The Member of Parliament for Salaga South, Zuwera Mohammed Ibrahimah, is leading renewed efforts to establish a district office of the Narcotic Control Commission (NCC) in Salaga, citing the rising incidence of drug abuse among the youth and the challenges posed by the long distance to the Savannah Regional capital.
She made the call while receiving a delegation from the NCC, led by the Savannah Regional Commander, Patricia Rashida Ewuntomah. According to the MP, the growing drug problem in the area poses a serious threat to the future of young people and requires urgent intervention.
“Our young people are increasingly getting caught up in drug abuse, and this is destroying their future. We cannot sit idle while this menace grows,” she said, stressing that the absence of an NCC office in the district has made it difficult for residents to access support and enforcement services.
The NCC delegation later paid a courtesy call on the Kpembewura, Banbange Ndefoso IV, who expressed deep concern about the situation and pledged the full support of traditional authorities, including chiefs and queen mothers, towards establishing the office.
Describing the MP’s request as timely, Regional Commander Ewuntomah noted that the distance to the regional capital has negatively affected effective service delivery.
She said a district office would enhance monitoring, education, and response efforts in Salaga and its surrounding communities.
The team also inspected a proposed temporary office space at the Business Resource Centre and expressed satisfaction with the facility. Ms Ibrahimah welcomed the positive feedback and thanked the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mubarak, as well as the Savannah Regional NCC team, for their support.
The move comes amid growing national concern over substance abuse among young people, with civil society groups and security agencies calling for stronger community-level interventions to curb the trend.
