SafeCare, CHAG set new benchmark for faith-based healthcare in Africa

Ghana is emerging as a model for quality-driven healthcare in Africa, thanks to a partnership between SafeCare and the Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG). The collaboration is helping faith-based hospitals and clinics across the country improve patient care, safety and operational efficiency – and its success is now being replicated in Kenya and Tanzania.

Speaking at a ceremony in Accra marking the handover of the SafeCare programme from PharmAccess Ghana to CHAG, Director of SafeCare International, Roelinde Bakker praised CHAG’s leadership.

According him, Ghana’s progress is a shining example of how strong partnerships and consistent quality improvement can transform healthcare delivery.

“The progress in Ghana is a shining example, inspiring our partnerships with faith-based organizations in Kenya with Catholic Relief Services and in Tanzania with the Christian Social Services Commission. Your leadership has been instrumental in strengthening SafeCare’s presence and growth in Ghana, and this success belongs to all the facilities that have embraced the SafeCare journey,” she said.

SafeCare, which now operates in 25 countries with 39 partners across Africa and Asia, works to make healthcare measurable, accountable, and sustainable. In Ghana, it introduced the “paying for quality” model, linking financial incentives to measurable improvements in patient care.

The programme focuses on continuous quality improvement, patient safety, and professional training. Facilities such as St. James Clinic and Holy Family Catholic Hospital in Sunyani have become flagship examples of the impact, showing improvements in patient care, adherence to safety protocols, and overall efficiency.

“Your hard work and commitment are an inspiration, not just to us, but to other countries where SafeCare is active,” Bakker added. During her visit to these hospitals, she commended local healthcare professionals for their dedication. “It takes time, effort, and belief – but the progress is real and visible.”
