The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has announced the launch of a landmark renewable energy programme designed to extend clean and sustainable electricity to thousands of Ghanaians living in remote and island communities.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, July 16, Mr Jinapor revealed that the government officially launched the Ghana Scaling Up Renewable Energy Programme (STRIP) on May 30, 2025.
“The Ministry has launched the Ghana Scaling Up Renewable Energy Programme, known as STRIP, and we did it on 30th May 2025. This project is funded with an $85 million grant from the African Development Bank, the Climate Investment Fund, SECO, and the Government of Ghana,” he stated.
According to the Minister, the STRIP project is set to transform access to electricity in underserved areas by deploying a wide range of solar-powered infrastructure.
“The project aims to deploy 12,000 NEC meter solar PV systems across homes, construct 35 mini-grids to supply electricity to 70,000 people and 47 island communities, and ensure that we provide 1,450 solar home systems for off-grid households and public facilities,” Mr Jinapor outlined.
He emphasised that this initiative is a core component of the government’s broader green energy agenda, focused on reducing the nation’s dependence on fossil fuels while fostering inclusive growth.
“This is not just about energy; it is about bridging the energy gap, promoting environmental sustainability, and improving livelihoods in communities that have long been left behind,” he said.
The $85 million STRIP project aligns with Ghana’s commitment to climate resilience, rural development, and a just energy transition. It also reflects a strategic partnership between government, development partners, and the private sector in advancing clean energy solutions.
