Samuel Abu Jinapor, MP for Damongo and Ranking Member of Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee

The Member of Parliament for Damongo, Samuel Abu Jinapor, has called on the Majority in Parliament to reintroduce the original Anti-LGBTQ Bill passed by the 8th Parliament without any modifications.

His call comes after the Speaker hinted at possible proposals by the majority to adjust sections of the bill before its reintroduction to Parliament, an approach that the Damongo legislator strongly opposes.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament, Abu Jinapor emphasised that the bill, which was unanimously approved by the previous Parliament following broad national consultations, reflected the collective will of the country and should not be altered for political convenience.

“Let them bring the bill as it was, and as was passed by the 8th Parliament in the same form and shape. Don’t change it. Don’t water it down. What Ghanaians want is a law that promotes good sexual conduct in Ghana and prevents LGBTQ,” he stated firmly.

The Anti-LGBTQ Bill, officially known as the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, was passed by the 8th Parliament but was not assented to before the end of the term of the previous government.

The new NDC-led administration has since announced plans to reintroduce the bill in the 9th Parliament, reportedly with some proposed modifications.

However, Abu Jinapor, who also serves as Ranking Member on the Foreign Affairs Committee, warned that any attempt to tamper with the original provisions would undermine the integrity of the legislative process and disregard the moral and cultural values cherished by Ghanaians.

His remarks have rekindled national debate over the fate of the controversial legislation, which continues to divide opinion among civil society organisations, faith-based groups, and international partners.

As the 9th Parliament prepares to reopen deliberations on the bill, all eyes will be on how the Majority leadership responds to the Damongo MP’s firm call to restore the bill in its original form.
