The founder of Little Angels Trust, Dame Levinia Enim, has made a strong call for extensive public awareness on the importance of regular medical check-ups to help prevent the late diagnosis of health conditions.

As Ghanaians in the country and across the world celebrated Ghana’s 69th Independence Day with parades and colourful displays of culture, talent and the nation’s history, Little Angels Trust commemorated the day with pregnant women, new mothers and children at the Cape Coast Metropolitan Hospital.

The Trust, among many things, donated clothes, toys, and some food items to the maternity unit of the hospital.

Speaking to JoyNews, Dame Enim noted that health conditions such as cancer can be effectively treated when detected at an early stage, encouraging the public to prioritise routine medical screenings and seek timely medical attention to safeguard their health and well-being.

She said, “Late diagnosis is our enemy. So, the more awareness we create, the more people can come out and go for help. The more you shout, the more you will definitely get people like us or some other organisation or a philanthropist who may want to support. We don’t need to have children who are dying needlessly, just because they need help. There is help. Unfortunately, sometimes we don’t go through the right channels, or the right people don’t hear about us or our illnesses, and that is one of our biggest challenges.”

She also emphasised that the organisation’s mission is to promote a healthy legacy for the country by supporting sick children and mothers.

She indicated, “We love this [Cape Coast Metropolitan Hospital] hospital, and what is better than to come here and bless these children, and make sure we can help, support and campaign on their behalf to stay healthy, live well, and become doctors, managers, prime ministers, presidents, nurses, matrons, to help the nation of Ghana. That is what freedom is, and that is what we believe in and the legacy or inheritance we need to pass on to the future.”

She also added her voice to JoyNews’ campaign for the establishment of a Leukaemia centre in Ghana, expressing her wish for every region in the country to have an oncology unit.

The medical superintendent of the hospital, Dr Vincent Kudoh, acknowledged the gesture.

“This is the 2nd time this year they [Little Angels Trust] have come to visit us. They are generally interested in supporting children. They donated to the children’s ward in January, and they have done the same again today. This is to alleviate some of the problems some of the mothers face, in terms of financial constraints, and also create some joy for the children. Today truly marks a wonderful occasion. And we are very grateful for that.”

The Cape Coast Metropolitan Hospital has, for years, deteriorated in terms of infrastructure. However, as the hospital continues its revamping efforts, Dr Kudoh tells Cape Coasters that all is not lost yet.

He said, “We want the people in the community to know that Cape Coast Metro Hospital is gradually becoming ready to be able to take care of their needs. So, they shouldn’t feel hesitant to approach the hospital for health services. They should come to the hospital and see for themselves what we can do for them.”

Adding a unique touch to the 69th birthday of Ghana, babies born at the hospital on March 6, 2026, were affectionately named “Kofi Ghana” and “Efua Ghana” in tribute to the country’s independence day.
