PruRide Accra champions health, youth empowerment and sustainability through cycling

Prudential Life Insurance Ghana has once again demonstrated its commitment to health, youth development, and environmental sustainability through the successful hosting of the sixth edition of PruRide Accra at the Black Star Square.

The event, which attracted over 400 cyclists from Ghana, Nigeria, and Morocco, continues to grow as a leading platform for promoting cycling as a tool for healthy living, eco-friendly transport, and sporting excellence. This year also featured 100 electric bicycles from Yenko Mobility, further reinforcing the event’s focus on sustainable innovation.

Launched in 2019 and inspired by RideLondon; the world’s largest annual cycling festival formerly sponsored by Prudential Plc, PruRide Accra is designed to promote health and fitness, encourage cycling as an alternative mode of transport, and support the development of cycling as a sport in Ghana.

This year’s event was organized by Prudential Life Insurance Ghana, in partnership with the Ghana Cycling Federation and Carbon AV. Through radio, online campaigns, and the vibrant ride through the streets of Accra, this year’s edition reached and engaged an estimated 20,000 people across various touchpoints.

Speaking at the event, Jane Dornukuor Mingle, Chief Executive Officer, of Prudential Life Insurance Ghana, highlighted the broader vision of PruRide; to build a nationwide cycling culture that supports leisure, alternative transport, and professional sports, while helping reduce Ghana’s carbon footprint.

“Cycling promotes wellness, provides a sustainable and affordable way to move, and opens up economic opportunities for young people,” she said. “That’s why we’ve supported PruRide and cycling development since 2019 and even started a cycling club within our company.”

She noted that PruRide is purposefully designed for both amateur and elite riders to promote healthy lifestyles and alternative transport while complementing national efforts to grow the cycling sport. The initiative, she added, reflects Prudential Life’s purpose; “To be partners for every life and protectors for every future,” and aligns with its sustainability pillar of simple and accessible health and financial protection.

Sports Minister’s Commendation

Speaking at the event, Kofi Iddie Adams, Minister for Sports and Recreation, commended Prudential Life for its long-standing investment in cycling and its role in shaping a more sustainable future.

“With the right partnerships and strategic investments from companies like Prudential Life, PruRide and other domestic cycling competitions have the potential to grow into continental and global platforms, attracting talent and tourism to our shores,” he emphasized.

The Minister, alongside the CEO and management of Prudential Life, President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), Richard Akpokavie, Director of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah and other officials joined hundreds of cyclists to ride in this year’s event.

Celebrating Champions and Inclusion

This year’s event recorded about 400 cyclists, thus, 120 elite riders and 280 amateur riders. In the women’s 75km road race which had an average speed of 25.16kmph, Nigerian cyclists Mary Samuel and Patience Effiong Otuodung secured first and second place respectively with a time of 2:58:52 and 3:01:23, while Ghana’s Erica Sedzro came in third with a time of 3:01:27.

In the 100km men’s road race, Solomon Tagoe of Gutten CC emerged victorious with an impressive finish time of 2:53:00. Followed by Frank Akuffo Awuku of TBT who clocked in at 2:55:58, and Prince Maison of Club Sky Team, who came third with a time of 2:57:04.

Top winners received cash prizes of GHS15,000, GHS8,000, and GHS5,000, along with trophies, medals, and souvenirs. Riders placing 4th to 10th received GHS1,000 each. Special awards were also presented to the youngest and oldest riders, top-performing clubs, and persons with disabilities. All participants, including amateurs, received medals and souvenirs.

PruRide Accra continues to inspire a growing community that champions health, empowers youth, and promotes sustainability through the power of cycling.
