Prof. Gyampo demands retraction and apology from UG colleague over 'defamatory' comment

The heated feud between two senior academics at the University of Ghana (UG), which spilled into a public television brawl over the weekend, has escalated into a formal legal confrontation.

Professor Ransford Gyampo, a Professor of Political Science at the University of Ghana and Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shippers Authority, has initiated action against Dr. George Domfeh, demanding an immediate retraction and apology for what he considers defamatory statements.

In a letter dated November 16, 2025, from the law firm Darko, Keli-Delataa & Company, acting as solicitors for Professor Gyampo, Dr Domfeh was served with the notice.

The letter directs Dr. Domfeh to retract the offensive statement and apologise to Professor Gyampo within 24 hours of receiving the letter.

It is coming on the back of an altercation that occurred on Saturday, November 15, 2025, following their appearance as guests on TV3’s current affairs programme, The Key Point.

According to the law firm, the policy and intellectual disagreements between the two panelists became “ascerbic, insulting and downright defamatory”.

The core of the dispute centres on an allegation made by Dr. Domfeh:

  • The Claim: Dr. Domfeh “claimed in a statement widely published on the popular national media platform that our Client is a Professor who sleeps with under-age girls”.
  • The Interpretation: Professor Gyampo’s solicitors assert that this statement was “widely understood by many right-thinking members of the viewing public to mean that our Client is a paedophile”.

Professor Gyampo’s legal team characterised the statement as “not only reckless, but it is patently false, malicious”.

They argued that the claim presents a “public image of our Client as hideously immoral and irresponsible” and was made without any basis in fact or in law.

The solicitors emphasised the damage to Professor Gyampo’s reputation as a “respected academic and a national thought leader”, given the prominence of the platform on which the allegation was made.

For the retraction and apology to be considered satisfactory, the lawyers demanded that it “should be published on a similar prominent platform hosted by the media organization on whose network you made the impugned statement”.

The letter concludes with a clear warning that if Dr. Domfeh fails to comply with the directive, Professor Gyampo has given “firm instructions… to take legal action against you”.
