Prioritize legal scholarship for development - Oswald Azumah tells African law students

Ghanaian lawyer Oswald K. Azumah, has urged law students across Africa to prioritize legal research and scholarship as a means of driving the continent’s intellectual development.

Speaking at the launch of the maiden edition of the Federation of African Law Students (FALAS) International Journal of Law at the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Mr. Azumah said a strong culture of research and academic writing among law students would strengthen the quality of African legal systems.

According to the multiple award-winning writer and editor, investing in legal scholarship is not only vital for personal growth but also for the evolution of homegrown African jurisprudence.

“Spoken words fly away, but written text remains,” he said, urging law students to document their thoughts and findings to contribute to Africa’s legal and intellectual legacy.

The newly launched Journal features seven scholarly articles from Ghana and Kenya. Mr. Azumah, who serves as its Editor-in-Chief, encouraged broader participation from students and young lawyers across the continent in subsequent editions.

The launch formed part of the FALAS–AU Conference, which brought together over 200 delegates from law faculties, bar associations, and legal organizations across Africa.

The event, held under the theme “Strengthening African Youth Leadership through Ubuntu for a United and Independent Africa – In Alignment with the 1 Million Next Level Strategy,” provided a platform for young legal minds to engage policymakers, academics, and jurists on how law can be used as a tool for integration and sustainable development.
