PRINPAG commends gov't for proposal to establish National Media Fund; calls for swift operationalisation

The Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG) has expressed deep appreciation to the Government of Ghana for proposing the establishment of a National Media Fund, describing the move as both “timely and essential” for the survival and growth of the country’s media landscape.

According to PRINPAG, the initiative comes at a critical moment when many media organisations, especially smaller and privately owned outlets are struggling with rising operational costs, declining advertising revenue, limited training opportunities, and increasing sustainability challenges. These constraints, the association noted, threaten media vibrancy, independence, and long-term viability.

In the statement signed by its President, David Tamakloe, PRINPAG also acknowledged President John Mahama for his renewed commitment to media development, recalling that he first introduced the idea of a national media support mechanism during his first term in office, although the initiative could not be fully implemented before the end of his administration in 2016.

The association said President Mahama’s renewed leadership gives them confidence that the vision he once championed will now be realized.

“PRINPAG remains hopeful that this new effort to activate and implement the Media Development Fund will come to fruition,” the statement noted.

While welcoming the proposal, PRINPAG urged the Government to fast-track the processes leading to the establishment and operationalisation of the Fund so that journalists and media institutions can receive timely support.

To ensure transparency and professional management, the association proposed that the Fund be built on strong governance structures, including a dedicated Secretariat, a Fund Administrator, and an Independent Board made up of competent and experienced persons.

PRINPAG further called on media stakeholders, civil society organisations, development partners, the private sector, and the general public to support the initiative to strengthen Ghana’s media ecosystem.

The association emphasised that a strong and independent media is crucial for deepening democracy, promoting accountability, and advancing national development.

PRINPAG reaffirmed its commitment to working with Government and all stakeholders to build a vibrant, free, and sustainable media environment in Ghana.
