The 2021 Population and Housing Census reveals that over half a million people in marriages in Ghana dissolved, whilst close to one million marriages were separated.

Amid the surge in marital breakdowns, Fruitful Ministries International (FMI), is advocating for post-marriage counseling to address emerging issues in marriages.

General Overseer of House of Faith Ministries, Reverend Dr. Alfred B. Nyamekye, is urging churches and counselors to prioritize continuous support to curb the rising divorce rate, which experts warn could destabilize society.

The growing trend of marriage breakdown and the complexities of post-marital statuses threaten the family institution and societal foundations.

Fruitful Ministries International (FMI) is leading efforts to sustain marriages to promote and strengthen the Ghanaian family system.

Rev Dr. Nyamekye, says the first seven years of marriage are a crucial adjustment period where many issues originate, often leading to later divorces.

He insists these unaddressed early conflicts should be tackled with consistent counseling.

“When people are getting married, they get premarital counselling. I will recommend that people get post-marital counselling also. At least once a month you meet your counsellor to tackle problems that have emerged in the marriage would be dealt with.

“Marriage experts have concluded that the first seven years of every marriage is what we call, the trying and adjustment period. People marry for years and call it a quit after several years, but when you trace, it collapsed in the first seven years,” he said.

National Director of Fruitful Ministries International Inc., Reverend Christian Danso, reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment, admonishing parents to take charge in protecting their families against bad values.

“National development is rooted in the foundation of parenting in homes. Aspects of parenting have broken down. It’s not about imparting knowledge, but also the actions of parents put out. Parents are not doing their work well. Parents should typify and practically demonstrate what they want to impart to their children,” he said.
