The Northern Regional Police Command has launched an investigation into an alleged assault involving renowned Ghanaian visual artist, Ibrahim Mahama, in Tamale.
According to an official press release issued by the Public Affairs Unit of the Regional Police Headquarters on March 21, 2026, the incident reportedly involved some police officers. Authorities say they are treating the matter with urgency and have begun inquiries to establish the facts surrounding the allegation.
“The Northern Regional Police Command has commenced investigations into a reported assault on visual artist, Mr. Ibrahim Mahama by some officers in Tamale,” the statement confirmed.

Police officials have assured the public that transparency will be maintained throughout the process. They emphasized that updates on the ongoing investigation will be communicated as developments unfold.

The Command also addressed circulating claims in sections of the media suggesting that the Special Operations Team, commonly referred to as the “Black Maria,” was involved in the alleged incident.
Police firmly denied these reports, stating that the unit had already been withdrawn from the Northern Region earlier in March under orders from the Inspector-General of Police.

Authorities are urging the public to remain calm and allow due process to take its course as investigations continue.
