The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested a key suspect in connection with a series of motorbike thefts reported across the capital in recent weeks.

According to the police, the suspect, Emmanuel Akanpatiba, was picked up on June 24, after a resident of Madina reported the theft of his red Royal motorbike from his home overnight.

Acting on intelligence, officers traced the stolen motorbike to the suspect, who, during interrogation, admitted to the crime and identified his accomplice as Israel Fredrick Lomotey, currently on the run.

Police investigations have since uncovered a wider network involving at least 12 motorbike thefts in areas including Madina, Adenta, Lapaz, and Teshie.

According to the suspect, the stolen bikes were typically transported to the Agbogbloshie Onion Market, where they were sold to known receivers identified as Nurudeen, Ali, and Inusah.

The police stated that Mr Akanpatiba confessed to breaking the steering locks of the motorbikes before transporting them to Agbogbloshie.

The stolen bikes were reportedly sold for between GH¢2,000 and GH¢3,000, depending on the year of registration.

The statement said efforts are underway to arrest the remaining accomplices and recover more stolen bikes.

The police have urged the public to properly secure their motorbikes and valuables and report suspicious activity to the nearest police station.
