The People’s National Convention (PNC) has formally petitioned the Electoral Commission (EC) to delay certifying the registration of the People’s National Party (PNP), citing concerns over potential confusion among voters.
In a statement issued by the PNC’s legal representatives on July 16, the party expressed reservations regarding the similarity between PNP and PNC. The PNC argues that using “PNP,” a name closely associated with its predecessor party and the palm nut tree emblem, could mislead voters into believing that the PNC and PNP are interconnected.
“The executives of the newly formed PNP were formerly associated with the PNC, and this historical link, coupled with the similarities in name and emblem, risks creating a misconception among voters,” the statement asserted.
The PNC’s solicitors emphasized clarity and transparency in electoral processes to avoid confusion and ensure fair representation for all parties involved.
The EC, which is tasked with overseeing Ghana’s electoral integrity, has yet to respond to the PNC’s appeal. The outcome of this petition could influence the PNP’s registration status and impact the upcoming electoral landscape in Ghana.
