The Chief Executive of JANE’M Salon Spa, Janet Sunkwa-Mills has revealed that her love for hair-making and beautification generally, was triggered by her childhood encounter with dolls.

In a conversation with Irene Adubea Aning on Joy Learning TV’s entrepreneurship and career development programme dubbed, The Career Trail, the Lead Judge on Ghana’s Most Beautiful pageant show, explained how being the only girl in a male-dominated family, got her close to her dolls most times.

Janet further emphasised that she enjoys beautifying things, and often used to style the hair of her dolls which piqued her curiosity to start a hair-making business as she grew up.

“Because I am the only girl, I was playing a lot with my dolls. It sounds cliché but it is a fact. I was playing a lot with my dolls and tried to figure things out. Make clothes for them, you know you do their hair, make them pretty, etc.”

In addition to this, Janet also mentioned that she grew up to be very responsible at a very young age because she was tasked to look after his brothers.

Janet also recalled how, at the age of eleven, she was accepted as a boarder at Mampong Girls Middle School and used to make people feel beautiful.

“When I went to Mampong Girls Middle School, there was an old lady in the compound whom l developed friendship with. I used to do her hair, help her wash her clothes among others and she used to say ‘you have a knack for looking after people and for making people feel good so later in life, you can consider that”, she stated.

She stated that after enrolling at the University of Ghana, her passion intensified even more, adding that she used to make the hair of her colleagues at no cost because she just loved to see them look attractive.

According to her, when she eventually decided to start her own business, she didn’t think twice about opening a salon and spa, and her friends were equally not amazed when they heard about her business since they had already witnessed her passion.

Janet however clarified that, regardless of her hair-making skills, she went to school to master and develop that skill, and therefore urged students who want to become entrepreneurs to prioritise education.

According to her, regardless of being a graduate, she went to Tony & Guy Academy in California to master hair-cutting and hair coloring. She also stated that she did an advanced diploma in hairdressing at the International Career Institute in the UK.

“I find that sometimes, a lot of people say I want to be an entrepreneur without having a basic educational foundation. To be a serious entrepreneur, you need to have a very solid ground in terms of education, and if you can, start working for someone, and in so doing you will acquire more skills,” she noted.

Today, Janet is one of Ghana’s most successful businesswomen who runs Jane’M Salon and Spa. In addition to her role at Jane’M, she is the CEO of Afribiz Group Limited, which encompasses various companies providing marketing/media Consultancy, Agri-Business, Beauty/Wellness, and IT/Cyber Security solutions in Ghana and Africa. She also serves as the Chairperson of the Executive Committee at EWN, Executive Women Network.
