Pekyerekye youth reject mining activities, appeal for intervention of gov't and Asantehene

The youth of Pekyerekye community in the Asante Akyem North Municipality have firmly rejected any form of mining in their community, citing concerns over environmental degradation and the future of their land.

At a press conference held after a protest, the youth issued what they described as a loud and clear message that mining activities will not be tolerated in Pekyerekye and its surrounding areas.

Addressing the media, the youth appealed to the government and the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to listen to their concerns and support their stance against mining.

According to them, experiences from other communities have shown that mining often leaves behind devastated lands, polluted water bodies and social challenges.

“Productive cocoa, food crop, and vegetable farms will be destroyed, leaving farmers without livelihoods and threatening food security.”

“Rivers and streams that serve as sources of drinking water have been polluted with mercury and other harmful chemicals, posing serious health risks to our people.”

“Exposure to toxic chemicals used in illegal mining will lead to skin diseases, respiratory problems, and other long-term health complications, especially among children and pregnant women.”

The concerned youth warned that allowing mining in Pekyerekye could threaten farmlands and water sources, which form the backbone of the community’s economy.

The youth, therefore, called for proactive measures to prevent any mining concessions or activities in the area.

“Today, we state clearly and without any ambiguity that Asante Akyem Pekyerekye is hereby declared a NO-GO AREA for all forms of illegal.”

“This declaration represents the collective will of the youth and people of Asante Ayem Pekyerekye to defend our environment and protect our future through lawful and peaceful means.”

The youth leadership emphasized that their opposition is not driven by politics but by a collective desire to safeguard their environment for present and future generations.

They urged authorities to respect the will of the people and engage the community before any decisions are taken.
