Awentami Paul Afoko, former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III.
In a statement, he acknowledged the personal and national significance of her loss, describing it as a “devastating blow” to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who tragically lost his only surviving sister and traditional mother.
Afoko reflected on the honour bestowed upon him by the Asantehene earlier this year, when the king sent a high-level representative to his late father’s funeral in Sandema. In his tribute, Afoko wrote:
“I am particularly saddened by such a devastating blow to the Otumfuo on the loss of his only surviving sister and traditional mother.”
He went on to commend the Asantehene, joining a chorus of Ghanaian leaders, clergy, traditional rulers, imams, and citizens in recognising the Asantehene’s national importance.
Afoko concluded his heartfelt message in Twi, extending sympathy directly to the king: Nana Otumfuo, me ma wo due, due ne amanehunu. Due Damirifa Due.
The Distinguished Life of Asantehemaa Nana Konadu Yiadom III
Nana Konadu Yiadom III, born Nana Ama Konadu in 1927, was enstooled as the 14th Asantehemaa on 6 February 2017, following the passing of her esteemed mother, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II.
Despite having no formal education, she received robust informal training within the palace and grew into a respected advisor to the Asantehene while upholding Ashanti customs
Her reign was notable for her philanthropic contributions to healthcare, supporting maternal and paediatric units in regional hospitals, and for her active promotion of women’s empowerment and community welfare.
The Saviour Church even named a school after her in recognition of her charitable efforts.
Asantehemaa’s passing on 7 August 2025, at the age of 98, was publicly announced by the Asantehene on 11 August, during an emergency Asanteman Council meeting held at Manhyia Palace.
A one-week mourning observance has been scheduled to begin on 21 August 2025.
