Paul Adom-Otchere hasn't been formally charged with any offence - Lawyer

Legal counsel for Paul Adom-Otchere, Nicholas Lenin Anane Agyei, has told JoyNews that the broadcaster and former Board Chairman of the Ghana Airport Company Limited has not been formally charged with any offence following his release from the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

Speaking on JoyFM’s Top Story on Friday, August 1, after Mr Adom-Otchere was granted bail, Mr Agyei clarified that his client voluntarily submitted himself to the OSP and was subsequently released in the company of his legal team, including former Attorney General Godfred Dame.

“I must put on record that as of now, Mr Adom-Otchere has not been formally charged with any offence. He has only been informed that he’s being investigated for some suspected offences and, accordingly, he has been cautioned,” he stated.

The investigation relates to Mr Adom-Otchere’s tenure as Board Chair of the Ghana Airport Company Limited.

His legal counsel revealed that the OSP is probing a now-terminated contract.

“It is in respect of that transaction that he was invited. He is being investigated for corruption and corruption-related activities, without any specifics as to the exact act of corruption that is suspected to have been committed,” Mr Agyei explained.

He further outlined that his client is being investigated for alleged corruption and corruption-related activities, breach of procurement rules, and the use of public office for private gain.

“Again, there is no specific indication as to what gain was obtained or from which transaction,” he added.

Responding to questions about Mr Adom-Otchere’s stance on the allegations, the legal counsel pointed to the broadcaster’s earlier public comments, which outlined his position before he voluntarily appeared at the OSP.

“Even before he presented himself to the OSP and before he was arrested after voluntarily submitting himself, Mr Adom-Otchere had done a public airing of his position on these matters. He said that as a board chairman, ‘we did what the board was supposed to do, we approved what we were supposed to approve, we did not participate in the signing of it, the contract, in fact, took effect after we had left office’,” he said.

He noted that Mr Adom-Otchere would, in due course, speak directly to the specifics of the allegations and provide further clarity on the matters under investigation.
