The Parliamentary Select Committee on Health has indicated its readiness to support the retooling of major health facilities to improve care delivery.

Member of the Committee, Dr. Thomas Anabah is unhappy about the deaths related to obsolete and malfunctioning equipment at health facilities across the country.

“It is unacceptable that we don’t have equipment in the hospital to take care of patients. Either it is the fault of the government or the managers or proper national planning. What we need to do is to find resources to equip the hospital”, he said.

The MP added, “There are various ways to get equipment to hospitals but the committee will have to sit and agree before we come out with the final solution.”

The committee’s pledge comes on the back of a recent visit of the Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, which revealed malfunctioning equipment has resulted in the deaths of some patients at the Tamale Teaching Hospital.

The breakdown of life-saving equipment in major hospitals of the country remains a challenge to the country’s healthcare delivery.

Despite the situation being recurrent, successive governments appear to have done little to deal with the situation.

Dr. Thomas Anabah believes it is about time a lasting solution is implemented to deal with the challenge.

He spoke to Joy News during familiarisation visit to some selected health facilities in the Ashanti Region and has come through with this report.

The committee, as part of its mandate, visited the Ashanti Regional Hospital and Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi.

Lack of space and high attrition rates remain a worry for these facilities.

The Parliamentary Committee, through deliberations with managers, proposed some solutions to address the challenges.

Dr Anabah is hopeful of an amicable resolution as he expressed confidence in the managers of the facilities.

Meanwhile, the committee is encouraging the facilities to consider expanding services offered to the public.
