Parliament

Parliament has adjourned its sitting following the death of Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, former First Lady of Ghana and founder of the 31st December Women’s Movement.

The announcement of the adjournment was confirmed by our parliamentary affairs reporter.

Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, who served as First Lady from 1982 to 2001 during the tenure of her late husband, Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings, was widely recognised for her advocacy for women’s rights and social development initiatives.

She championed education for children in underserved communities and was instrumental in the enactment of the Intestate Succession Law, which strengthened inheritance rights for women across the country.

Her death has prompted tributes from politicians across the political divide, including members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and other parties, who commended her contributions to Ghana’s social and political landscape.
