PAG mourns El-Wak stampede victims, says tragedy reflects Ghana’s deep youth unemployment crisis

The Progressive Alliance of Ghana (PAG) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of six young people during the security service recruitment exercise at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra.

In a statement signed by its 2024 Presidential Candidate, Dr John Kpikpi, the party described the incident as both painful and avoidable, extending condolences to the bereaved families and prayers for those injured.

“Our thoughts and prayers are also with the five individuals receiving intensive care and the twelve others in critical condition. May they all receive full healing and restoration,” the statement read.

The PAG said the tragedy reflects a much deeper national problem — the growing frustration among Ghana’s unemployed youth.

The party described the overwhelming number of applicants who showed up for the recruitment as “a loud cry for hope from a generation that feels left behind.”

According to the statement, the incident should serve as a national wake-up call for the government to take bold, transparent, and sustainable action to tackle unemployment.

“The time has come for government to take bold, transparent, and sustainable measures to tackle unemployment, especially among the youth.

“Ghana’s development cannot progress while its energetic young men and women remain idle and desperate,” it said.

The party called for urgent reforms to drive job creation through industrial growth, private sector empowerment, and the modernisation of agriculture.

It urged government to move beyond rhetoric and deliver practical solutions that expand opportunities and restore economic confidence.

The PAG also demanded a thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to the stampede and called for accountability to prevent a recurrence.

“Let us honour the memory of those who died by renewing our commitment to build a nation where every young person has a fair chance to work, thrive, and contribute meaningfully to Ghana’s future,” the statement concluded.
