PAC urges EPA, environment ministry to clamp down on illegal fuel stations in residential areas

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament has called on the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to take decisive action against individuals and companies that site petrol and gas stations within residential areas.

The Committee expressed concern that such developments pose a major safety risk, warning that they could lead to catastrophic consequences in the event of a fire or explosion.

Speaking during a committee sitting, Samuel Atta Mills, the Acting Chair of PAC, described the trend as alarming and unacceptable. He said the EPA must intensify enforcement efforts to protect lives and property.

“The dangers in siting petrol and gas stations within residential communities are real and deadly in times of emergencies. Such actions must not be entertained,” Mr. Atta Mills stressed.

He further urged the EPA to review its licensing processes to prevent operators from abusing the system, noting that some individuals were using falsified or questionable documents purportedly issued by the agency.

Committee Member and MP for Atwima Nwabiagya North, Frank Yeboah, also called on state institutions to step up oversight and curb recurring regulatory breaches in public and private entities.

“State agencies must work harder to stop the ritual of infractions we continue to see. We cannot afford to compromise public safety,” he said.

The PAC’s call comes amid increasing reports of fuel and gas stations springing up in densely populated neighbourhoods, sparking public concern over weak enforcement of environmental and safety standards.

Authorities say they will continue to monitor compliance and take measures to ensure that only properly licensed facilities operate in approved zones.
