The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has confirmed that more than 5,700 residents have been significantly impacted by severe flooding across 14 districts in the Central Region over the past 10 days, as relentless rains continue to cause widespread devastation.

Kwesi Dawood, the Central Regional Director of NADMO, outlined the extent of the flooding, which has been exacerbated by heavy rains recorded between June 18 and June 27.

The situation has left many residents in desperate need of immediate assistance due to extensive property damage and displacement.

“The Central Region has experienced flood disasters in 14 of our districts, excluding Cape Coast Metropolis. Affected areas include Komenda, Assin South, Dunkwa-On-Offin, Upper Denkyira East, Mfantseman, Mankessim, Agona East, Agona West, Winneba, Gomoa East, Awutu Senya West, and East. Our staff members have conducted thorough assessments in these regions, and the findings have been submitted to the relevant authorities. We are currently awaiting a relief response for the affected communities,” Mr. Dawood told Citi FM on June 27.

He further emphasised that preliminary reports indicate approximately 5,700 individuals have been displaced or affected by the flooding, with numerous homes submerged and properties severely damaged.

In addition to the flooding crisis, Cape Coast is dealing with a separate disaster as two buildings collapsed on the night of June 26, bringing the total number of collapses in the metropolis to six within a single week.

The latest incident took place in Brofoyedur around 10 p.m., when a residential structure succumbed to the torrential downpour that had already weakened it.

Fortunately, the occupants had evacuated the premises beforehand due to prior flooding, and there were no injuries reported.

As the communities in the Central Region grapple with these challenges, NADMO is mobilising resources and coordinating with local authorities to provide necessary relief and support for those affected by this natural disaster.

The organisation urges residents to remain vigilant and report any emergencies to the relevant agencies as efforts continue to address the situation.
