The Oti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Alex Acquah, has visited Nkwanta in the Nkwanta South Municipality to engage residents and security personnel following recent violent incidents in the area.

According to a release issued on Friday, March 27, by the Police, the visit, which took place on March 26, formed part of efforts to promote peace, strengthen security, and reassure the community after a series of attacks that claimed lives and damaged property.

DCOP Acquah first met police personnel in the area, where he encouraged them to remain vigilant and uphold discipline and professionalism in the discharge of their duties.

He later led a joint security team made up of officers from the Police Service, the Military, the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI), and the Defence Intelligence to the Zongo community. There, they met the Zongo Chief, Alhaji Issaka Kayaba, and his elders.

During the meeting, the Regional Commander conveyed condolences on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police and the Police Management Board to the community following the recent attacks.

In his response, Alhaji Kayaba assured the delegation of the community’s commitment to peace and unity. He stressed that residents would avoid reprisals and work towards maintaining harmony.

According to the Police Command, the Chief gave “assurance of the community’s commitment to peace, non-retaliation, and coexistence”.

As part of the visit, DCOP Acquah also inspected the site of a previous arson incident at Dadaga, where two people lost their lives. The visit was to help assess the situation on the ground and guide further security measures.

The Police Command said it continues to monitor developments closely and is working with other security agencies to maintain stability in the area.

Residents have been urged to remain calm and cooperate with security personnel. The Command also cautioned against the spread of false information, warning that it could worsen tensions.

“The Command urges residents to remain calm, law-abiding, and cooperative with the security agencies,” a statement signed by Deputy Superintendent of Police John Nchor, Public Affairs Officer for the Oti Region, said.

It added that the public should exercise restraint and avoid actions that could lead to further escalation of the situation.
