OSP must work with FBI to extradite Ken Ofori-Atta or… – Mustapha Gbande

Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has expressed frustration over the delayed prosecution of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta for alleged economic crimes during his tenure.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Mr. Gbande questioned why the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has not collaborated with international bodies like the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to hold the former minister accountable.

“If the OSP cannot work with the FBI to bring Ken Ofori-Atta, then the FBI cannot come to Ghana to take people to the U.S.,” he said. “They extradite Ghanaians for crimes abroad but cannot extradite Ken Ofori-Atta to face prosecution in his own country for crimes committed here.”

Mr. Gbande further accused Ofori-Atta of portraying himself as a victim while ordinary Ghanaians continue to suffer the consequences of his policies.

“Does anybody think Ken Ofori-Atta is innocent or has treated Ghanaians fairly? He punished citizens, including pensioners, and was part of the PDS scandal. Anything scandalous under Nana Addo, he was the PRO and actually superintended it,” he added.

The OSP had declared the former minister wanted after months of failed attempts to summon him over alleged corruption and abuse of office.

Authorities noted that no official medical documentation had been submitted to justify his extended stay abroad.

However, Ofori-Atta’s wife, Angela Ofori-Atta, later confirmed that he had successfully undergone surgery for prostate cancer at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

She explained that the procedure, a robot-assisted radical prostatectomy, took place on Friday, June 13, and lasted over four hours.
