Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has criticised the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) for what he describes as an unreasonable condition set for his release following his arrest on Wednesday, December 3.
Speaking in an interview with Joy FM on Thursday, Mr Kpebu said he was shocked when the OSP asked him to provide proof of ownership of a landed property as part of his bail conditions.
“After I was arrested and I had written my statement, when it was time for them to grant me bail, they stated that I needed to provide a landed property in my name, and it looked like a joke to me,” he said.
Mr Kpebu expressed frustration at the treatment he received, particularly after he had allegedly been verbally abused by a soldier stationed at the OSP. “After a soldier had verbally abused me and you haven’t protected me, someone who has come to help you to do your work, and now you arrest me, and you say I should produce a landed property,” he added.
He criticised the OSP for what he perceives as a heavy-handed approach, arguing that such demands were unnecessary for someone who voluntarily came to assist the office in its investigations.
The OSP has yet to comment publicly on Mr Kpebu’s allegations regarding the bail conditions.
