OneGhana Movement mourns fallen ministers, demands aviation safety reforms

The OneGhana Movement has expressed sorrow over the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight individuals, including two serving ministers of state, Dr Omane Boamah and Dr Murtala Mohammed, on Wednesday.

In a statement, the civic movement extended its deepest condolences to the families, colleagues, and all affected by the disaster, describing it as a national tragedy that has left the entire country in mourning.

“We honour the memory and legacy of the departed ministers and the other passengers on the helicopter. We recognise and honour their dedication to public service and the betterment of Ghana,” the statement read.

The Movement highlighted the strong relationship it shared with both ministers, noting their critical support in the fight against illegal mining through the Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey.

“Both were committed supporters in our fight against Galamsey… their cooperation and service to Ghana made them OneGhanaians in many ways,” said Senyo Hosi, Director of the Movement.

The late Defence Minister, Dr. Omane Boamah, was also remembered for his role as Special Guest of Honour during the Movement’s recent Republic Day Public Lecture, co-hosted with the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College.

“We are heartbroken and devastated by this tragic occurrence, but hopeful that their service to the country shall be a continuous inspiration to many, and their fight against Galamsey, which led to the loss of their lives, shall not be in vain,” the statement added.

The Movement called on government to not only support the bereaved families but also to institutionalise a government-funded group life insurance policy for dependents of public officials who dedicate their lives to national service.

It further urged a “thorough, transparent investigation” into the cause of the crash and pressed for an urgent review of aviation safety protocols to prevent such future tragedies.

“This sorrowful moment is also a call for unity and resilience,” the statement concluded, calling on Ghanaians to come together in compassion and strength, guided by shared values and a collective hope for a better future.

“May the souls of our departed leaders rest in peace, and may Ghana remain united and steadfast.”
