Okyeame Kwame, WHRO Ghana team up for Abia Beach cleanup on Saturday

Ghanaian musician Okyeame Kwame is partnering with Dr Kofi Agyekumhene, Director of the Wildlife and Human Resources Organisation (WHRO Ghana) and Senior Lecturer at the Department of Marine and Fisheries Sciences, University of Ghana, for a beach cleanup exercise at Abia Beach in Ningo-Prampram this Saturday, 8th November 2025.

The exercise aims to promote clean and resilient coastal ecosystems and to protect endangered sea turtle species that nest along Ghana’s coast. It also forms part of a broader commitment to conserve marine biodiversity and ensure healthy coastal environments for both humans and wildlife.

Speaking about the event, Dr Agyekumhene said the initiative is designed to raise awareness about the importance of protecting marine habitats and reducing coastal pollution, especially in areas that serve as sea turtle nesting sites.

He explained that through this collaboration with Okyeame Kwame, they hope to inspire collective responsibility among coastal communities and institutions, strengthen partnerships between local communities, government agencies and conservation organisations, and support sustainable coastal livelihoods by ensuring cleaner, healthier beaches that benefit both people and nature.

The cleanup, he noted, is part of a continuous effort, not a one-off activity. Over the years, WHRO Ghana and its partners have organised several beach cleanups to maintain sea turtle nesting sites and improve coastal cleanliness.

While this event takes place on Saturday, 8 November 2025, WHRO Ghana plans to expand its efforts across more coastal communities in the coming years. The organisation hopes to make coastal cleanups a national culture, working with district and municipal assemblies and traditional authorities to make coastal sanitation a key part of Ghana’s local and national development agenda.
