Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed and his former colleague lawmaker for Ledzokuku, Dr Bernard Okoe-Boye have suggested ways in which high rent charges in Ghana can be addressed.

Speaking on the New Day show on TV3 Wednesday October 6, with host Johnnie Hughes, Murtala noted that landlords and ladies are increasing rent arbitrarily.

He also noted that they demand two years advance payment, a situation he described as unacceptable because the action violates the laws of the country.

“We live in a country where anybody can increase rent at any time.

“The extent to which people are now compelled, particularly young men and young ladies who happen to find themselves in schools in Accra, go to the hostels they have four in a room and they pay ¢2000 each . It means they are paying almost ¢8000.

“Landlords and landladies increase rent every year. I think it is just completely unacceptable,” the former Deputy Minister for Trade said.

For his part, Dr Okoe-Boye called for strict enforcement of regulations to curb this situation.

“What the government can do and what the state can do is try to and enforce regulations that reduce abuse but the bottom line is that even with regulations if your supply situation is bad and the demand is huge it is difficult for prices to go down,” the former Deputy Minister of Health said.
