A member of the legal team representing former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has clarified that neither Ghana’s Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) nor the Attorney-General has contacted them regarding his detention in the United States.
Speaking on The Pulse on JoyNews, lawyer Frank Davies said, “I don’t speak for government. I’m a lawyer.
The OSP has not contacted us. The Office of the Attorney-General has also not contacted us. So, we can only, at this stage, speak to you now.”
His comments come after Ofori-Atta, who is in the US for medical treatment, was detained by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) late Wednesday over the status of his stay in the country.
The 66-year-old former minister, who served under former President Nana Akufo-Addo from 2017 to 2024, faces corruption charges in Ghana. He was declared a fugitive last February and formally charged in November 2025.
Davies emphasised that the legal team is addressing the matter only from a US legal standpoint, adding that any action by Ghanaian authorities would be handled separately.
“Whatever the government has to do in the enabling circumstances, I believe as this matter unfolds, they’ll come out with their own case. But for now, whatever we say is limited to what we know,” he said.
Ofori-Atta is currently held in a facility in Virginia, according to the ICE database. His lawyers have indicated that they expect the situation to be resolved expeditiously while maintaining that the detention is unrelated to any extradition attempts by the OSP or Attorney-General.
This development has fueled public speculation in Ghana, but Davies urged citizens to focus on verified information, noting that Ofori-Atta’s rights are fully protected under US law.
