General Construction, Manufacturing and Quarries Workers Union Holds 2nd Quadrennial Delegates Conference
The General Construction, Manufacturing, and Quarries Workers Union of TUC (Ghana) recently held its 2nd Quadrennial Delegates Conference, aiming to enhance occupational health and safety within the industry. The conference sought to define occupational safety and health as the science of anticipation, recognition, evaluation, and control of hazards arising in the workplace that could impair workers’ health and well-being.
Held under the theme “Enhancing Occupational Health and Safety at the Workplace: The Role of the Union and the Employer,” the conference underscored the shared responsibility of employers and the union in promoting safe working conditions.
Dr. Anthony Yaw Baah, Secretary General of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), highlighted the need for prioritizing safety in the construction sector. He stressed the importance of using protective equipment and the duty of leaders to educate workers and employers about potential hazards.
Madam Comfort Agambaa, General Secretary of the Construction, Manufacturing, and Quarries Workers Union of TUC, emphasized the union’s commitment to ensuring that every worker returns home safe. She pointed out that creating a safer and healthier work environment is a fundamental human right, referencing the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) 2022 adoption of Occupational Safety and Health as a Fundamental Convention. This move underscores the global recognition of the critical importance of workplace safety.
