Nutrifoods Ghana Limited has commissioned an upgraded wastewater treatment plant at its Tasty Tom factory in Tema, reinforcing its commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible industrial practices.

The project, valued at just under $1 million, marks a significant step in improving industrial water management in Ghana.

The facility is designed to treat wastewater efficiently, reduce environmental impact, and protect surrounding communities.

The commissioning, held under the auspices of the Royal Danish Embassy, brought together policymakers, regulators, industry players and environmental experts.

It also highlighted the need for stronger wastewater management systems across the country.

The upgraded plant was engineered by Alumichem, a firm known for its water treatment technologies.

Speaking at the event, Business and Country Head of Nutrifoods Ghana, Jay Anjaria, said the investment reflects the company’s long-term sustainability strategy.

“Nutrifoods Ghana Limited will continue to invest in innovative engineering solutions and sustainable practices to drive operational excellence and ensure long-term environmental stewardship,” he said.

He noted that less than 4% of wastewater in Ghana is currently treated, stressing the need for more investment in infrastructure.

“This upgraded facility will not only ensure the efficient treatment of wastewater generated from our operations, but it will also support the sustainable reuse of treated effluent for non-process applications.

“This will significantly reduce environmental impact while promoting water conservation,” he added.

Mr Anjaria described the project as a strategic investment that goes beyond regulatory compliance.

“Our investment represents more than a compliance initiative — it is a cornerstone of the company’s long-term sustainability strategy and a clear demonstration of the high operational standards we uphold,” he said.

The Accra East Regional Director of the Environmental Protection Authority, Samuel Oteng, commended the company for the initiative.

“The significant investment in this facility reflects your commitment to prioritising environmental responsibility while continuing to strengthen your bottom line,” he said.

He urged other industries to follow suit, describing the project as one worth emulating.

Deputy Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, Gizella Tetteh-Agbotui, also praised the initiative, linking it to global water sustainability goals.

“By this investment, Nutrifoods Ghana Limited is undoubtedly contributing to the promotion of the sustainable management of freshwater resources, as required to accelerate action toward Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6): water and sanitation for all by 2030,” she said.

She added that the ministry supports such initiatives and encourages more industry players to invest in sustainable water solutions.

The commissioning strengthens Nutrifoods Ghana’s position as a responsible manufacturer focused on environmental protection, operational efficiency and sustainable value creation.
