NUGS President leads delegation to Turkey to strengthen student diplomacy and diaspora welfare

The President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), Daniel Nii Korley Botchway, has embarked on an official mission to Turkey aimed at deepening international student relations and improving welfare support systems for Ghanaian students abroad.

Mr Botchway left Accra on Friday, November 28, 2025, with a seven-member delegation as part of what NUGS describes as a strategic student diplomacy agenda to expand its global footprint and strengthen ties with Ghanaian communities in the diaspora.

According to NUGS, the mission focuses on three key priorities: inaugurating the newly formed NUGS–Turkey Branch, engaging Ghanaian students in Istanbul and Ankara on welfare challenges and academic collaboration, and representing Ghanaian students at the Istanbul Education Summit.

As a statutory body recognised under Ghana’s education framework, NUGS says international outreach remains essential to amplifying the concerns of Ghanaian students worldwide.

During the visit, the delegation paid a courtesy call on the Ghanaian Consulate in Istanbul on Saturday, November 29, where they held discussions on student safety, academic support, and coordination between NUGS and consular authorities.

In a statement released after the meeting, NUGS expressed appreciation to the Consulate for what it described as “dedication and continuous support” to Ghanaian nationals studying in Turkey.

The Union noted that strengthened cooperation would “enhance communication, improve welfare mechanisms, and create new opportunities for Ghanaian students.”

The delegation also highlighted plans to formally inaugurate the NUGS–Turkey Branch as part of its expanding Diaspora Bloc, which now coordinates student affairs across several countries.

NUGS says the new chapter will serve as a structured platform to engage students, offer assistance, and promote educational partnerships between Ghana and Turkey.

With this mission, the Union maintains that it is committed to advancing student diplomacy, expanding representation, and ensuring that Ghanaian students — whether at home or abroad — have a strong voice in matters affecting their education and welfare.
