The third day of the preliminary stage of the 2023 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) National Championship race witnessed schools exhibiting their intellectual talents and academic excellence.
With the atmosphere filled with excitement, there was readiness among all participating schools as they aimed to showcase their academic abilities with the hopes of securing a place in the one-eighth stage of the national championship.
The academic competition commenced on Sunday, October 8 at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.
The first preliminary contest of the day featured KNUST SHS, T.I. AMASS Kumasi, and Tolon SHS.
T.I. AMASS, Kumasi took the lead in the first round of the contest, amassing an impressive score. KNUST SHS secured the second position, while Tolon SHS faced a challenging road ahead.
As the contest unfolded, an air of intensity enveloped the venue, with all participating schools showcasing their academic prowess. KNUST SHS with dedication and teamwork managed to surpass T.I. AMASS with a substantial score, but Tolon SHS remained at a disadvantage.
In a surprising twist, T.I. AMASS made a remarkable comeback during the third and fourth rounds of the contest, regaining their lead over KNUST SHS. Ultimately, T.I. AMASS SHS emerged as the victors with a total of 45 points, while KNUST SHS and Tolon SHS secured 42 and 8 points, respectively.
The next contest of the day featured a battle between Ashaiman SHS, Wa SHS, and Mamfe Methodist Girls SHS.
Ashaiman SHS claimed the lead in the first round of the contest, with only a narrow margin separating them from their competitors. However, Mamfe Methodist Girls SHS took over in the second round, leaving Wa SHS trailing behind.
With dedication and teamwork, Ashaiman SHS managed to regain the lead in the third and fourth rounds, ultimately securing their place in the one-eight stage with an impressive score of 51 points. Mamfe Methodist Girls SHS and Wa SHS earned 41 and 31 points, respectively.
The third preliminary contest of the day featured Konongo Odumase SHS, Asamankese SHS, and Sonrise Christian High School.
Konongo SHS took the early lead in the first round of the contest, leaving its competitors trailing behind. They continued to widen the gap in the third and fourth rounds.
At the contest’s conclusion, Konongo SHS emerged victorious with a commanding 44 points, leaving Asamankese SHS in second place with 27 points and Sonrise Christian High School with 20 points.
As the sun brightened in the sky, a fierce competition unfolded between Aburi Girls SHS, Tema Methodist SHS, and Bongo SHS.
Aburi Girl’s SHS dominated the first and second rounds of the contest, showcasing their intellectual skills. As the contest progressed, they further widened the gap between Tema Methodist and Bongo SHS.
They maintained their lead in the subsequent rounds of the contest, ultimately winning with an impressive 55 points, while Tema Methodist SHS and Bongo SHS secured 35 and 20 points, respectively.
In the fifth preliminary contest, Mpraeso SHS faced off against Acherensua SHS and Kintampo SHS for the one-eight slot.
Acherensua SHS took the lead in the first round of the contest, but Mpraeso SHS overtook them in the second and third rounds, securing a significant advantage. As the contest progressed, the schools continued displaying their academic prowess and teamwork.
But Mpraeso SHS maintained their position and further widened the gap in the fourth round, ultimately winning with a total of 60 points. Acherensua SHS earned 34 points, while Kintampo SHS trailed with 15 points.
The next contest featured St Charles Minor Seminary SHS, Akwatia Presby SHS, and Nafana Presby SHS. The contest was tight and intense in the first round with all schools displaying their intellectual skills as Akwatia Presby SHS took the lead.
But St Charles Minor Seminary overtook them in the second round with Nafana SHS coming in second place. With dedication and hard work, St Charles Minor Seminary SHS widened the gap and emerged victorious with 42 points.
Nafana Presby SHS maintained their second position with 23 points, and Akwatia Presby SHS trailed with 20 points.
The seventh contest of the day saw Odorgonno SHS leading in the first and second rounds, with Kpando SHS in second place and Adu Gyamfi SHS trailing behind.
Odorgonno SHS continued to dominate in the subsequent rounds and secured a spot in the one-eight stage with 34 points. Kpando SHS earned 26 points, while Adu Gyamfi SHS had 20 points.
As the sun set, another intense contest unfolded between Our Lady of Mt Carmel Girl’s SHS, Yendi SHS, and Otoo Memorial SHS.
Our Lady of Mt Carmel Girls SHS dominated the early rounds, with Yendi SHS in second place. As the contest progressed, Our Lady of Mt Carmel Girls continued with their dominance, showcasing their academic prowess and intellectual skills with Otoo Memorial SHS facing difficulties in making a comeback, resulting in a negative score.
At the end of the contest, Our Lady of Mt Carmel Girls SHS emerged victorious with 42 points, while Yendi SHS and Otoo Memorial SHS secured 28 and 9 points respectively.
The final contest of the day featured St Mary Boy’s SHS, Yaa Asantewaa Girls SHS, and Amenfiman SHS battled for the one-eight slot.
Yaa Asantewaa Girls SHS took the lead in the first and second rounds of the contest, creating a wide gap between its competitors. However, an unexpected turn of events saw St Mary Boy’s SHS overtaking them in the fourth round.
With hard work and determination, St Mary Boy’s SHS widened the gap in the final round, securing their place in the one-eight stage with 33 points. Yaa Asantewaa Girls SHS earned 21 points, while Amenfiman SHS had 12 points.
