President Akufo-Addo has expressed his desire for the Volta Region to eventually become a stronghold of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The President believes that the region, traditionally seen as a stronghold of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has historical ties to the NPP.
Speaking at the 61st Hogbetsotsoza durbar in Anloga, the President pointed out that Dr. J.B. Danquah, a key figure in the United Party, the precursor to the NPP, won decisively in Anlo and Ho West in the 1960 elections, even though he lost at the national level.
President Akufo-Addo expressed his determination to work towards a shift in the electoral fortunes of the NPP in the Volta Region.
“I’m convinced the NPP should be the natural home of the people of the Volta Region… In 1960, Dr J.B. Danquah stood on the ticket of the United Party, the predecessor party to the NPP… In that election, Danquah won decisively here in Anlo and in Ho West even though he lost in the country. Need I say more?”
“Until that day comes when the Volta Region returns home to its proper political roots, I shall continue to woo it,” he affirmed.
During the event, the President acknowledged the development projects initiated in Anlo during his tenure and pledged to ensure the completion of ongoing projects, including the Anloga District Hospital under the Agenda 111 project.
Togbi Sri III, the Awoamefia of Anlo, raised various pressing needs in the Anlo Traditional Area, such as the dredging of the Keta Lagoon, construction of the proposed Keta Port, and addressing water supply issues in several communities. The President assured that these concerns would be addressed, emphasizing his government’s commitment to infrastructure development in the region.
The festival, themed “Climate Change, a Challenge to Lands below Sea Level, a Concern of the Anlo State and the Stakeholders,” featured the historic visit of Yaa Naa Abubakari Mahama II, the Overlord of Dagbon, along with representatives from Togo and other dignitaries.
The event was chaired by Mr. Edward Doe Adjaho, former Speaker of Parliament, and was attended by members of the diplomatic corps, politicians, tourists, and prominent individuals from the region.
