NPP sanctions 16 officials over 2024 election misconduct in Upper East Region

The Upper East Regional Executive Committee of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has taken disciplinary action against 16 party officials and members from the Pusiga and Tempane constituencies following a series of misconduct allegations during the 2024 general elections.

A statement released by Regional Chairman Anthony Namoo on August 1, 2025, outlined the results of a comprehensive investigation conducted by the Regional Disciplinary Committee.

This inquiry was launched on January 25, 2025, and involved multiple hearings held in March. The committee finalised its findings in June, paving the way for the sanctions announced in August.

Among the notable sanctions, Sawuda Bilgumsey, the 2nd Vice Chairman, has been removed from his position and banned from holding any party office until he reimburses funds he is accused of misappropriating.

This significant penalty underscores the party’s commitment to financial accountability and ethical conduct among its leadership.

The sanctions vary in severity based on the nature of the misconduct:

  • Five-Year Ban: Six officials, including Musah Awudu, the 1st Vice Chairman, and Jacob Akazusah, the Treasurer, have been removed from their positions and barred from any party roles for five years due to serious infractions.
  • Four-Year Ban: One coordinator has faced dismissal and a four-year ban, reflecting the committee’s strict stance on misconduct.
  • Three-Year Ban: Eight members, including polling station officers and other party affiliates, have been suspended from their positions for three years, highlighting a range of accountability measures.

Not all individuals implicated faced penalties.

Five members, including Salifu Ibn Adams, the Constituency Research and Elections Officer, were found not guilty of the allegations against them and subsequently exonerated.

The Regional Executive Committee stressed the importance of these actions in maintaining discipline and accountability within the NPP.

The statement noted, “The disciplinary action is intended to uphold party discipline and ensure accountability among its members.”

In compliance with internal regulations, the party has directed that all affected officials be replaced to ensure the smooth functioning of party operations and to restore public confidence in its leadership.

As the NPP navigates the aftermath of these disciplinary actions, the focus will be on reinforcing adherence to party ethics and ensuring that all members align with the values of integrity and accountability.

The recent events serve as a critical reminder of the importance of ethical leadership in fostering trust and credibility within political organisations.
