Dr Bawumia

The campaign team of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has firmly denied allegations made by fellow New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer contender, Ken Agyapong, claiming he was offered $800 million to withdraw from the presidential primaries.

Dr Gideon Boako, spokesperson for Dr Bawumia, emphasised that this allegation is baseless and should be disregarded by both party delegates and the nation at large.

In a statement issued on Monday, October 30, Dr Boako clarified that the Vice President has not held any private meetings with the Assin Central MP since the start of the contest.

He further stated that Dr Bawumia had never instructed anyone to negotiate with Kennedy Agyapong or his representatives regarding the competition, emphasising the falsehood of these claims.

“The Vice President, Dr Mahamadu Bawumia has not met privately with Kennedy Agyapong since he entered into the race. The Vice President has never instructed anybody to meet with Kennedy Agyapong, or his assigns to negotiate anything in respect of this contest.”

“The Vice President and his team consider this $800 million claim as absolutely ridiculous, and it shows a gross disregard for the intelligence of Ghanaians.”

Dr Boako expressed confidence in Dr Bawumia’s prospects for a resounding victory on Saturday, November 4.

“Dr. Bawumia is, and has always been confident that by the Grace of God, he will defeat Hon. Kennedy Agyapong quite well on November 4th and has never entertained any wish for him to step down from the contest.”

In an interview on Time FM on Sunday, October 29, 2023, Ken Agyapong alleged that he was offered $800 million to withdraw from the party’s race for Dr. Bawumia.

However, he asserted that he declined the offer in the interest of the party’s delegates and the people of Ghana as a whole.

“Does he know the number of people who have approached me but for the love of Ghana and the delegates I have said I will never do it? The money they offered is $800 million if he doesn’t know. He should ask Mr. Oppong Bio if that is what they are saying but I said no, I will not step down, Ghana first. In 2016, you people were not able to buy pickups. How come today you are able to offer me $800 million? So I said I won’t step down…” he stated.
