Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia

The Kennedy Agyapong campaign has accused some former New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidates of attempting to “whitewash” Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s electoral record through their recent endorsement.

Spokesperson for the campaign, Kwasi Kwarteng, made the claim while reacting to the endorsement of Dr Bawumia by 118 NPP parliamentary candidates ahead of the party’s flagbearership contest scheduled for January 31, 2026.

Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Thursday, January 8, Mr Kwarteng said the endorsement seeks to shift blame away from what he described as Dr Bawumia’s poor electoral performance in the last general elections.

“They are trying to whitewash him and shift blame, as though his candidature did not cost the party its defeat,” he said.

He argued that the electoral data does not support such attempts, pointing out that Dr Bawumia underperformed in several constituencies and regions.

“They are aware that out of the 276 constituencies, Bawumia performed poorly, to the extent that 199 constituencies, he lost. They are also aware that out of seven regions in Ghana, Dr Bawumia did not win a single constituency,” Mr Kwarteng stated.

According to him, nearly 350,000 NPP supporters voted for parliamentary candidates but rejected Dr Bawumia in the presidential race, a development he said clearly reflects dissatisfaction within the party’s base.

“If you are minded, in the last election, close to 350,000 of our party supporters came to vote for our PCs and voted against Dr Bawumia. 99% of our PC’s outperformed him. So this attempt to whitewash him by this political astroturfing and cosmetic showmanship will not wash,” he stressed.

Mr Kwarteng maintained that no amount of endorsements from party elites would override the decision of polling station executives, whom he described as well-informed about the party’s current state.

“At the end of the day, which is the 31st, which is the D Day, they will be exposed. And the good people of our party, the over 209,000 polling station executives, will speak stronger, will speak mightier, and they will endorse the candidate of the people,” he said.
