Ghana’s opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) will begin a nationwide “Thank You Tour” on Wednesday, starting at its Asylum Down headquarters in Accra.

The six-week campaign aims to reconnect with party supporters following its 2024 election defeat.

National Organizer Henry Nana Boakye explained the tour’s purpose during an appearance on the Asaase Breakfast Show. “This is not a new tradition. Whether we win or lose, we have always gone back to thank our base,” Boakye said, referencing similar tours conducted by former President Nana Akufo-Addo after previous electoral setbacks.

The tour was postponed to avoid conflicting with the party’s internal review of its 2024 performance, led by the Michael Oquaye Committee. With that review now complete, party leaders will visit all 16 regions, beginning in the Western Region on April 26. Most former NPP presidential aspirants have confirmed their participation.

While framed as an appreciation exercise, the tour also serves as an early mobilization effort for the 2028 elections. Boakye acknowledged the party’s disappointing 2024 results but stressed the need to maintain supporter engagement. “We still need to show appreciation to the people who worked for us. We’ll need them again for the next campaign,” he said.

The National Organizer also used the platform to critique the new NDC administration, claiming it had failed to deliver on key promises during its first four months. “It’s already disastrous,” Boakye asserted, citing unfulfilled cocoa price commitments and security concerns.

Political observers note such tours have become standard practice for Ghana’s major parties following elections, serving both to reward grassroots workers and maintain organizational structures.

The NPP’s extended itinerary suggests a concerted effort to rebuild its national network ahead of the next electoral cycle, though its effectiveness may depend on the party’s ability to address voter concerns that contributed to its 2024 defeat. The tour comes as Ghana’s political landscape shows increasing competition between the two major parties, with both sides seeking to capitalize on perceived missteps by their opponents.
