Justin Frimpong Kodua

The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has acknowledged that the party is navigating one of its most challenging periods following its defeat in the 2024 elections.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr Kodua emphasised that the party’s current state cannot be downplayed.

“We cannot pretend. The NPP is in a very difficult and delicate situation,” he said.

With preparations for the NPP’s presidential primaries underway, he noted that elections naturally bring tension, mistrust, and occasional backstabbing. However, he stressed that leadership must remain firm and neutral to maintain order.

While some believe that national executives have abandoned their responsibilities, Mr Kodua insisted this is not the case. With National Chairman Stephen Ntim unwell, he explained that he had to take on additional duties until First National Vice Chairman Smith Butey stepped in to assist.

“We are all doing our best. As General Secretary, I must remain neutral because if not, by the end of everything, there will be problems,” he said.

He also disclosed that the party is working on expanding the Electoral College and updating the delegate register following the outcomes of the national delegates conference in July 2025. He noted that the IT team is ensuring a credible and comprehensive polling album.

Addressing calls for sanctions against party members over alleged misconduct, he clarified the limits of his role.

“It is not in my power to sanction or dismiss people from the party. Article 4 of the Constitution spells out the processes. My role is administrative, compiling the album and speaking as spokesperson, but there is a limit,” he explained.

Drawing an analogy, Mr Kodua likened his role to that of a football star: “As the General Secretary, we may be like Lionel Messi on the field, but if you don’t have adequate support, you will be fruitless,” he said.

He reaffirmed his commitment to his responsibilities, emphasising that unity and discipline among all executives will be crucial to steering the party through these challenging times.
