NPP General Secretary pledges free and fair primaries, urges unity ahead of January 31 elections

Justin Kodua Frimpong, General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has assured party members that the upcoming presidential primaries on January 31 will be conducted freely, fairly, and transparently, stressing the need for unity within the party.

In an exclusive interview with JoyNews, Mr Frimpong said the NPP is bigger than the five individuals contesting the primaries and urged members to prioritise the long-term interest of the party over personal ambitions.

“The most important thing that the rank and file of our party must understand is that the NPP is bigger than all those five people who are contesting. At the end of the day, just as we have had several party stakeholders who contested in the previous election, this is their time. They will come, they will go, but the NPP will remain the NPP,” he said.

Mr Frimpong added that while the January 31 elections are important, the party’s biggest contest remains the 2028 general election. He stressed that scheming to favour a particular candidate could undermine the party’s cohesion.

“At the end of the day, if I lose the election and the processes were not fair, then it gives me the reason to rock the boat. It gives me the reason to stay back and say, ‘Well, you have decided to skew the process to favour a particular person. So, you go and do your own campaign. We don’t want that situation,’” he explained.

118 out of 137 of 2024 NPP PCs declare support for Bawumia in presidential primaries

The NPP is preparing for the primaries amid heightened competition, with five candidates officially confirmed to contest for the party’s flagbearership ahead of the 2028 general elections.

He urged party members to approach the primaries with a spirit of unity and fairness, ensuring that the outcome is respected by all, regardless of individual results.

“Our supreme interest is to make sure that we go into the election as a united front. Then after the election, we remain as a united front, rather than scheming the process for one particular person,” Mr Frimpong added.

The NPP primaries, scheduled for January 31, are expected to set the stage for the party’s strategy and candidate positioning for the upcoming national elections.
