Member of Parliament for Tempane, Joseph Dindiok Kpemka says the New Patriotic Party’s hope of having some aspirants step down for others to contest will be an impossible feat.
Speaking on Newsfile, Mr Kpemka stated that all the aspirants who have picked forms to compete in the presidential primaries believe they have a chance at wining the election, and therefore will not be ready to give up their place for anyone.
He stated that these aspirants will only be hit with the reality on the ground on election day.
His comment comes after it was reported that the Council of Elders of the NPP will be holding crucial meetings with flagbearer aspirants in an attempt to talk some of them out of the race.
But Mr Kpemka said “I see that it’s a very good wish but it cannot be accomplished, it will be very difficult. I don’t see any of the people lined up who will voluntarily agree that ‘I will step aside and allow this person to go’.”
“Sometimes it is the people who urge you on that tell you that it is the noise in the media that is not in your favour but actually you will win when you go in. It happened in 2007 at Legon, I recalled that somebody got one vote after all that tour around Ghana, so the reality dawns on people only when counting begins,” he added.
About 10 people have picked forms to contest in the NPP’s presidential primaries. They are; former Ministers, Alan Kyerematen and Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and a former MP for Mampong, Francis Addai-Nimoh.
Others are former Energy Minister, Boakye Agyarko, a former General Secretary of the party, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, Energy Analyst, Kwadwo Poku, a two-time presidential aspirant, Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku and MP, Assin Central Kennedy Agyapong.
Meanwhile, Mr. Kpemka noted that in 2007 when NPP was faced with 17 candidates for the elections their constitution was amended to ensure that if there are more than five candidates a super delegate system, made up of national and regional executives, is adopted.
“They will then vote all the candidates who have presented themselves and the first five by order of votes are then presented to the electoral college as a whole for the delegate conference in November,” he explained.
Mr Kpemka believes that every one of the aspirants would be allowed to face the super delegates so the party would come to a conclusion rather than asking others to drop out.
