Ghana’s opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has amended its constitution to significantly broaden the Electoral College responsible for selecting its 2028 presidential candidate.

The reform, adopted during the party’s National Delegates Conference, extends voting rights to former officials and grassroots leaders in a move to strengthen internal democracy.

Under the revised framework, the Electoral College will now include all former Members of Parliament, parliamentary candidates, Metropolitan/Municipal/District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), and former ministers.

The expansion also incorporates former regional and constituency executives, National Council of Elders members, TESCON coordinators, and party patrons. Frank Davies, Chairman of the NPP’s Constitution Amendment Committee, confirmed the changes align with Article 13(1) of the party constitution, noting January 31, 2026, as the scheduled date for the flagbearer election.

This restructuring follows the NPP’s 2024 electoral defeat and responds to calls for greater inclusivity. By incorporating diverse tiers of past leadership, the party aims to leverage institutional memory while reconnecting with its base.

The amendment marks a pivotal shift in the NPP’s strategy to revitalize its candidate selection process ahead of the 2028 general elections under the current NDC administration.
