NPP asks Police CID to probe alleged plot to rig January 31 primaries

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has formally requested the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service to investigate allegations of a plot to rig its upcoming presidential primary scheduled for Saturday, January 31, 2026.

The request follows a petition allegedly authored and signed by Alex Kwaku Tetteh, a member of the campaign team of Ken Ohene Agyapong, one of the party’s presidential aspirants.

The petition was addressed to the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) and contains claims of attempts to unlawfully influence the outcome of the internal election.

The call for an investigation was made in a letter dated January 6, 2026, from the NPP’s Presidential Elections Committee (PEC), signed by its Secretary, William Yamoah.

According to the letter, the petitioner alleged the existence of schemes aimed at compromising the credibility of the primary, including claims of covert engagements involving officials linked to one of the aspirants and individuals said to be officials of the Electoral Commission.

“In addition to this petition, we have also intercepted two videos, which are practically making the same allegations,” the letter stated. “We are referring these three matters to you to investigate to confirm the veracity or otherwise of the allegations therein.”

The party noted that the allegations, if true, could seriously undermine the credibility, transparency, and integrity of the electoral process, raising both institutional and public concern.

“Accordingly, I have been directed by the Chairman of the Presidential Elections Committee to respectfully request your esteemed office to institute an immediate, thorough and impartial investigation into the allegations contained in the petition,” the letter added.

The NPP further stated that if the allegations are found to be unsubstantiated, appropriate and strict sanctions should be applied against the petitioner in line with the law and established procedures. However, if any of the claims are substantiated, the party said decisive and lawful action must be taken against all individuals found culpable.
