Flagbearer hopeful Bryan Acheampong has hailed the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) recent constitutional reforms as a demonstration of collective unity.

Following the July 19, 2025, National Delegates Conference, Acheampong stated the amendments reflect the opposition party’s resolve to strengthen its structure ahead of the 2028 elections.

Delegates at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium approved 54 of 56 proposed amendments to the NPP constitution. The reforms aim to enhance internal governance, expand representation, and streamline electoral processes.

Key changes include restructuring executive committees at all levels, separating the roles of Research and Electoral Affairs Officers, and granting voting rights to external branch executives.

Two motions faced rejection: Motion 17, which sought to centralize supervision of polling station elections under regional executives, was opposed over grassroots participation concerns. Motion 54, proposing to lower the party’s youth age ceiling from 40 to 35 years, also failed.

Notable approved measures include:

  • Expanding polling station executives from 5 to 7 elected members

  • Requiring government appointees to resign party positions

  • Abolishing the special electoral college system for presidential primaries

  • Granting voting rights to TESCON leaders and former MPs in primaries

  • Mandating biennial delegates conferences instead of annual gatherings

The amendments significantly enlarge electoral colleges for parliamentary and presidential primaries, incorporating constituencies, regions, and diaspora branches. Acheampong emphasized these changes position the NPP for renewed competitiveness despite recent electoral setbacks.
