The leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Tamale South constituency has lodged a formal complaint against the National Democratic Congress (NDC), alleging the defacement of posters belonging to their parliamentary candidate, Alhaji Fuseini Musah, during the recent celebrations of the Fire Festival, a significant cultural event in the Northern region.
According to the NPP leadership, posters along the Lamashegu and Tamale Teaching Hospital roads were targeted, while posters of the NDC parliamentary candidate, Haruna Iddrisu, remained untouched.
Abdulai Abdul Razak, the communications director for the NPP in Tamale South, spoke out against the incident during a press conference. He accused members of the NDC of perpetrating the act and announced their intention to report the matter to the police, citing violations under political party laws, demonstrating the NPP’s commitment to seeking justice.
“We have vehemently condemned this act of defacing and removing banners belonging to our hardworking Parliamentary Candidate, Alhaji Fuseini Musah, and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia,” stated Abdul Razak, emphasizing the NPP’s strong stance against such behavior.
He expressed dismay at the perceived bias in the vandalism, noting, “Strangely, the posters and banners of Hon. Haruna Iddrisu were not touched when we visited the scene to ascertain the level of the distraction.”
In their official statement, the NPP characterized the incident as a deliberate attempt by certain factions within the NDC to sow discord. They called on the NDC leadership in the region to ensure accountability among their members. The NDC, however, has denied these allegations, stating that they are committed to a peaceful and fair election process.
“This unfortunate and distasteful incident occurred on the night of the Fire Festival celebrations in the Northern region, specifically in the Tamale South Constituency,” Abdul Razak continued. “We expect all individuals involved to uphold maturity and respect for the country’s laws.”
The NPP’s accusations underscore the escalating tensions leading to the parliamentary elections, highlighting the challenges of maintaining political decorum and fair play in the Tamale South constituency.
