The District Chief Executive (DCE) for North Tongu, Victoria Amefadzi Yawa Doe, has called on residents to maintain their trust in government, particularly in light of the pledge to compensate victims of the 2023 flood disaster.

The disaster, caused by the spillage of the Akosombo and Kpong dams, devastated communities across the three Tongu districts in the Volta Region, submerging homes and collapsing livelihoods.

Speaking to the media after the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving held at the Aveyime RC Church, she assured residents that the NDC remains committed to delivering on its promises.

“My people should have faith in the NDC government. Coming into power, we have made promises, and we have already begun acting on them,” she said. “The investigative committee did its work and engaged the DCEs of the affected districts. The compensation team has also sent us directives on the necessary steps. I want to assure our people that whatever we’ve outlined in our manifesto will be fulfilled.”

She disclosed that over 400 housing units are being constructed in the North Tongu District, with many at various stages of completion.

Madam Doe also appealed to stakeholders and benevolent individuals to renew their support for displaced persons who are still living in temporary shelters.

“We still have people in the camps because the new housing units are not yet completed. As a district, we’ve done a lot to support them and will continue to do so.

“In the coming days, we’ll be distributing food items to them again. I’m calling on all those who supported us earlier—from NGOs to individuals—to once more come to the aid of these victims,” she urged.

Also present at the event was Precious Adalete of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), who called for national unity, especially among the youth.

“As we mark this day of national prayer and thanksgiving, we urge everyone to rise above bitterness and division. Let us come together and work for a better future,” Adalete said.
