The Deputy Commissioner of the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr Bossman Asare, has disclosed that none of the individuals affiliated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) or the National Democratic Congress (NDC) who were involved in violent disturbances during the 2024 general elections in Ablekuma North have been arrested or prosecuted.
He disclosed this at a press conference on Thursday, July 10.
“None have been arrested to date, although some of the perpetrators were captured in videos in circulation on social media.”
He attributed the disturbances to a lack of adequate security in the constituency.
“As a result of inadequate security presence at the collation centre, party supporters invaded the offices and destroyed properties of the commission, including furniture, doors, and louvre blades.”
Over the past six months, the constituency has remained without a representative in Parliament as the NDC and NPP continue to dispute the rightful winner of the seat.
Following several rounds of dialogue, the Electoral Commission deemed it prudent to rerun the election in 19 selected polling stations to determine the winner of the seat on Friday, 11 July.
The December 2024 election in the Ablekuma North Constituency was marred by chaos after supporters of the two leading political parties, NPP and NDC, clashed at several polling stations.
The disturbances disrupted voting processes, leading to the suspension of results in the constituency.
The inaction also led to the destruction of electoral materials and properties of the EC.
Friday’s re-run in these affected polling stations is expected to restore integrity to the outcome of the parliamentary election in the constituency.
The Electoral Commission has assured the public of heightened security measures and called on political parties to ensure peace and order.
