Regina Daniels and husband Ned Nwoko

Senator Ned Nwoko has denied widespread claims that he married Nollywood actress Regina Daniels when she was 17 years old, describing the allegations as “entirely untrue and misleading.”

In a statement shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, the Delta North lawmaker said the circulating claims, attributed to his estranged wife Regina, are false and “should not be accepted by the public.”

“It has come to my attention that false claims are being circulated by Regina, suggesting that I married her when she was 17 years old. These claims are entirely untrue and misleading,” Nwoko wrote.

The senator explained that during his first meeting with Regina, he asked about her age and was told she was 21. According to him, she provided documentary evidence to support that claim.

“During my first meeting with Regina, I asked her age, and she told me she was 21 years old. I further asked if she had any documents to support this, and she presented her INEC voter’s card, which clearly shows that she was born on October 10th, 1998,” he stated.

Nwoko said he has since kept the original voter’s card in his possession and added that the BBC had interviewed Regina’s mother after their marriage, during which she also confirmed her daughter’s age.

The senator maintained that their marriage took place six years ago, which, by his account, means Regina is now 27 years old.

“Any suggestion that I married her at 17 is false and should not be accepted by the public. The facts are verifiable and indisputable,” he added.

He also urged the public to treat Regina’s recent statements with caution, alleging that she is battling personal challenges.

“I urge the public to approach all her claims with caution and discernment, especially taking into account her current mental condition, having started and abandoned her rehabilitation from illegal drug addiction,” he wrote.

Background to the controversy

The revelation comes amid renewed scrutiny of the high-profile marriage between the politician and the actress. The couple, who tied the knot in 2019, have two children together. Their marriage has often been the subject of public debate due to the significant age difference between them.

Recent online claims have resurfaced, alleging that Nwoko married Regina when she was underage — a claim he now refutes with what he describes as “verifiable proof.”

Political activist Omoyele Sowore has called for further verification of the voter’s ID, arguing that conflicting records exist, while supporters of Nwoko insist the document settles the long-standing controversy.

For now, both Regina Daniels and her representatives have not issued a response to the senator’s latest statement.
