The Management of the National Identification Authority (NIA) is urging its staff to return to work amidst an indefinite strike over unpaid Operational Support Allowance, saying efforts are underway to resolve the matter.

In a statement signed by Acting Head of Corporate Affairs, Williams Ampomah Emmanuel Darlas, the NIA acknowledged the seriousness of the concerns raised by the staff union and appealed for calm.

The strike, declared by the NIA Division of the Public Services Workers’ Union (PSWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), took effect on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, and has sparked fears of disruptions to Ghana Card registration and verification services nationwide.

Management emphasised its commitment to resolving the issue swiftly and revealed that a meeting was held earlier Tuesday with the Chief Executive Officer of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), Dr. George Smith-Graham, and his team to discuss the matter.

According to the NIA, payments can only be made after receiving a clear timeline and written confirmation from the Ministry of Finance.

The Authority warned that the ongoing industrial action, if prolonged, could have significant implications, including revenue losses and service disruptions for institutions relying on the Ghana Card system.

While reiterating its earlier assurance that the allowances would be paid “very, very soon,” the NIA called on striking workers to resume duties in the interim.

It also announced plans for a follow-up meeting involving the Authority, the FWSC, and the union once the Ministry of Finance provides the required confirmation.

Mr. Darlas affirmed that the NIA Governing Board, chaired by Executive Secretary, Wisdom Kwaku Deku, supports efforts to resolve the issue and remains committed to fulfilling obligations to staff under existing agreements.

The NIA concluded its appeal by encouraging all staff to remain calm and cooperative as dialogue continues with relevant stakeholders.
